Q

How did the Tabla come about.

A

Invented by Amir Khusru in the 13th century. He was the chief councillor of Alludin Khilzi. He divided the pakawaj into two equal halves. This new instrument was played by placing in in front of the musician. It however did not gain prominence or the attention of the royal family. It remained the instrument of the Khawals , the Ghajals and the dancers. Tabla was the main instrument of their performances. The Tabla has since then gained prominence as the percussion of choice in Hindustani classical music. It was popularised by Ustad Udar Khan
