Determining organizational goals and action plans for how to achieve those set goals

Determining structure for both individuals jobs and overall organization
What is the definition of leading?
Directing and motivating people to achieve organizational goals
Define controlling
Monitoring performance and making adjustments as needed

Who is Abraham Maslow? What was his contribution to understanding human behavior?
Basic needs are shaped like a pyramid, from basic to more abstract, as each need is met a person is more motivated to attain the next need
They are (from bottom to top) Physiological, safety, social, esteem, self actualization
Who was psychologist Douglas McGregor and what was his contribution to understanding human behavior?
He was one of Maslow’s students and he introduced management theories X and Y
What is Theory X?
Dislike work, will try to avoid it at all costs, often need to be motivated with fear
What is Theory Y?
Work comes as natural as play or rest. Positive rewards can be motivating
What is job enrichment?
Creation of jobs with more meaningful content, under the assumption that challenging creative work will motivate employees
What is expectancy Theory?
Motivation theory concerns relationship among individual effort, performance and reward
What is equity Theory?
Perception of fairness directly affects worker motivation
What is strategic planning?
High level long term planning that establishes a vision for the company, defines long term objectives, and priorities, determines broad action steps and allocating resources
What is tactical planning?
More specific shorter term planning that applies strategic plans into specific functional areas
What is operational planning?
Very specific short term planning that applies tactical plans to daily, weekly, and monthly operations
What is contingency planning?
Planning for unexpected events usually involving a range of scenarios and assumptions behind the core plans

What are the different leadership styles?
Autocratic-makes all decisions with out consulting followers
Democratic- share power with followers, still make decisions but take input
Free-rein- set objectives for followers, but followers choose how to accomplish

Maximizing effectiveness of work force by recruiting world class talent, promoting career development, and determining strategies to boost organizational effectiveness
What is a companies mission?
Definition of an organizations Purpose values and core goals which provides frame work for all other plans
What are line organizations?
Organizations with a clear simple chain of command from top to bottom
What are line and staff organizations?
Organizations with line managers forming the primary chain of authority in the company and staff departments working alongside line departments
What are matrix organizations?
Organizations with a flexible structure that brings together specialists from different areas of the company to work on individual projects on a temporary basis
