Q

Facial surfaces of teeth include?

A

-Labial surfaces- surfaces of incisors or canines that are towards the lip.
- Buccal Surfaces- surfaces of premolars and molars that face the cheek.

25
Buccal and lingual surfaces can also be split into two groups each: ?
-Mesiobuccal and distobuccal -Mesiolingual and distolingual
26
Lingual surfaces on the maxillary arch can also be referred to as?
Palatal surfaces
27
Define Incisal/ Occlusal surfaces
-Incisal Surfaces- surface of incisors and canines that come in contact with those in the opposite jaws during the act of closure. -Occlusal Surface- surface of premolars and molars that come in contact with those in the opposite jaws during the act of closure/
28
Proximal Surfaces include?
-Mesial Surface- all surfaces towards the midline. -Distal Surface- all surfaces away from the midline.
29
The mesial surface and distal surface are collectively called?
Proximal Surface
30
How many dentitions do we have in a lifetime?
2! -Primary (Deciduous)- 20 teeth -Permanent- 32 teeth
31
How many dentition periods de we have, and what are they?
- Primary dentition -Mixed Dentition (both Primary & Permanent) -Permanent
32
At what ages do the three dentition periods occur?
-Primary- 6 months - 6 years -mixed- 6 years - 12 years -permanent- 12 years and on
33
Primary dentition begins with
the eruption of the first mandibular central incisor
34
primary dentition ends with
the eruption of the first permanent tooth
35
How many teeth are in each quadrant in primary dentition?
5
36
When does calcification begin in primary teeth?
4-5 months in fetal life to 3-4 years after birth
37
How do teeth normally erupt?
in pairs
38
During Primary dentition, the jaws are
growing
39
Mixed dentition begins with the eruption of ?
the permanent mandibular molar
40
Mixed dentition ends with?
the shedding of the last primary tooth
41
During Mided dentition, the jaws are ?
growing at their fastest rate
42
Mixed dentition is also known as the " " stage?
the awkward stage
43
When talking to parents about mixed dentition, you may point out some things, these include?
-tooth color changes -halitosis -size differences - tooth brush selection
44
permanent dentition begins with?
the shedding of the last primary tooth
45
permanent dentition ends with
the eruption of the last permanent tooth
46
How many teeth are in each arch of permanent dentition? each quadrant?
-16 per arch -8 per quadrant
47
Permanent teeth begin to calcify when?
after birth until about 25 years of age.
48
Jaw growth during permanent dentition?
slows down and eventually stops
49
Describe Incisors
-4 in each arch -designed to cut "make an incision" (straight edge) -tongue side shaped as shovel -bite and cut
50
What gives incisors a "shovel" appearance?
the lingual fossa
51
Describe Canines
-Two in each arch -designed for holding/grasping, piercing/tearing -importance is seen in dogs, where we got the name canine -longest teeth in the mouth (crown & root combined), best anchored -cornerstone of the mouth -major influence on one's facial appearance
52
Describe Premolars
- four in each arch (4mx, 4md) -sometimes called bicuspids -usually have two cusps -have occlusal edges, not incisal -help grind food and assist canines in tearing food -found in only the permanent dentition
53
Describe molars
-six in each arch -largest and strongest teeth -usually have 4 or more cusps on the occl surface, no incisal edges -grind up food -posteriorly located -muscles of the jaw exert strong forces -differ greatly from each other
54
Enamel covers what part of the tooth?
the crown
55
the anatomical crown ends where vs the clinical crown?
-anatomical crown ends at cej -clinical crown ends at gumline
56
Describe enamel
-hardest material in body -thickest over tip of crown (for food crushing) -thinner as it gets to cervical line
57
the color of enamel varies with
thickness and mineralization -thicker- whiter -thinner- more yellow because dentin shows through
58
what is enamel composed of?
-96% inorganic matter -3% water -1% organic matter
59
Describe dentin
-largest portion of tooth -softer than enamel but harder than cementum or bone -covered by enamel on crown -hard, dense, calcified tissue yellow in color, elastic in nature
60
what is dentin composed of?
-70% inorganic matter -30% organic matter and water
61
What are the types of dentin?
-Primary dentin- formed before apex of tooth is completed -Secondary Dentin- formed after completion of the apex & will form for the life of the tooth -Reparative dentin- laid down in response to caries or trauma
62
Describe Cementum-
-covers the root -there could be voids exposing dentin -main function: anchorage- provides a medium for the attachment of the tooth to the alveolar bone.
63
What is cementum composed of?
-63% inorganic matter -23% organic matter (makes it able to regenerate) -12% water
