What is environmental science?
It is the interdisciplinary science that deals with the study of the environment
What is ecology?
The study of the relationship between the organisms and environment
Organism modify the environment
Environment shape the organism
Focus of the ecology include:
Organisms, population, communities, ecosystem, and biosphere
Areas of ecology
Organism/species, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere
What is organism/species
Organisms that are capable of interbreeding
What is population
Group of organism that are living in the same area at the same time
What is community
Group of population living in the same area at the same time
What is ecosystem
Group of community that interacts with an abiotic factor
What is biosphere
Area in the atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere where life exists
2 components of ecosystem
Biotic factor and abiotic factor
What is biotic factor
Living things; plants, animals
What is abiotic factor
Non living things; water, nutrients, rock, minerals
Law of tolerance
States that each population has a minimum and maximum tolerance level of each abiotic factor
Law of limiting factor
States that too much or too little of an abiotic factor may influence the population growth even though all the other abiotic factors fall within the range tolerated by the organism
2 types of ecosystem
Terrestrial ecosystem and aquatic ecosystem
What is terrestrial ecosystem
Land based ecosystem; forest, grassland, tundra, desert
What is aquatic ecosystem
Present in a body of water
2 types of aquatic ecosystem
Freshwater ecosystem and marine ecosystem
Functions of ecosystem
Regulation of essential ecological processes which supports life systems and
renders stability.
Nutrient cycling between biotic and abiotic components.
Maintenance of balance among difference trophic levels in the ecosystem
Cycling of minerals through the biosphere
Synthesis of organic components which involve the exchange of energy
3 types of species interaction
Symbiotic, competition, predation
3 types of symbiotic
Mutualism, commensalism, parasitism
2 types of competition
interspecific and intraspecific
Least inclusive to most inclusive ecology
Biosphere, ecosystem, community, population, organism
