Authorized Classification Society- An Authorized Classification Society (ACS) is a recognized classification society (46 CFR Part 8), that has been delegated the authority to conduct certain functions and certifications on U.S. flagged vessels on behalf of the Coast Guard. The classification society must enter into an agreement with the Coast Guard for individual certificate authorizations (load line, tonnage, safety construction, etc.).
