(18 cards)
What is research?
Carefully planned course of action designed to generate knowledge/information and expand our understanding of a specific topic, idea, or concept
What are the 6 types of research?
- Basic
- Applied
- Translational
- Quantitative
- Qualitative
- Mixed-Methods
Basic Research
The primary aim of greater knowledge or understanding
Applied Research
Directed toward finding solutions to an immediate and practical problem
Translational Research
Applies finding from basic research into meaningful everyday practices
Quantitative Research
Collection and analysis of numerical data
Qualitative Research
Extensive observations and interviews in a natural environment provide non-numeric data
Mixed-Method Research
Combination of qualitative and quantitative
Longitudinal Experiment
Study of change in a variable over time
Cross-sectional Experiment
Requires collection of data on individuals of different characteristics who represent different attributes
Sequential Experiment
Combines Longitudinal and cross-sectional
Systematic Revies
Predetermines eligibility criteria to identify, assess, and synthesize all the empirical evidence to answer a specific research question
Mete-analysis
Statistically analyzing data from previously published research studies
Randomized clinical trials
Involves subjects being allocated at random to receive one of several interventions
Survey, interview, and observational
Documentation, description, analysis, and interpretation of conditions that presently exist in a specific population
Historical Research
Systematically examining and interpreting past events to give an account of what has occurred
