Introduction Flashcards
What is an operating system?
It is a software that manages computer hand and software resources and provides services for the computer. It acts as an intermediary between users and computer hardware, facilitates the execution of applications, and manages system resources
What are the types of operating systems that exist?
Acronym: RS-MEDS
-> Real-time OS
-> Single-user, multitasking OS
-> Multi-user OS
-> Embedded OS
-> Distributed
-> Single-user, single-tasking OS
What is a real-time operating system and what is an example of it?
These are operating systems that are designed to be used for time-sensitive applications, that is applications with a specific time constraint. e.g Operating systems used industrial automation
What is a Single-user, multitasking operating system and what is an example of it?
It is an operating system that allows a single user to run multiple programs simultaneously. e.g Microsoft Windows
What is a multi-user operating system and what is an example of it?
It is an operating system that allows multiple users to access a computer and use it simultaneously e.g.Linux distributions like Ubuntu.
What is an embedded operating system and what is an example of it?
This is an operating system that is designed to work on a specific device with limited resources. e.g. Android Operating system.
What is a distributed operating system and what is an example of it?
It is an operating system that runs on multiple computers but allows them to work as a single system. e.g. operating systems used in cloud computing.
What is a single-user, single-tasking operating system and what is an example of it?
It is a type of operating system that allows a single user to run one program at a time. e.g. early versions of MS-DOS
