Background Information
Background information: The UK is a representative democracy, meaning that we the people decline our political decision-making rights and elected representatives adopt these on our behalf. Their primary role as representatives is to act as a check and balance for the executive and ensure that all actions taken by the government are accountable to and for the people of the UK.
Factors
This essay will discuss question time, committee work, the House of Lords and Private Members bills as factors that all exist in a representative democracy to hold the government to account.
Line of Argument
This essay will argue that whilst these can hold great power in scrutinising the actions of the government, the ruling party continues to dominate UK politics and that these factors can never truly hold the government fully accountable.
