What’s the issue of law vs enforcement?

A

By 1870, black Americans ‘free and equal’, but when Fannie Lou Hamer went to vote in Mississippi in 1962, she was sacked and told she wasn’t ‘ready’ because she was black. When campaigning, blacks had trouble getting laws passed to help, and even more trouble enforcing any laws.

A

Different ways, in different times and places. Different methods attracted more campaigners at certain times. Used legal challenges, non-violent AND violent protest. Also movements that encouraged separatism - giving up the fight and living away from discrimination and violence.

What other groups fought for greater rights?

A

Native Americans also deprived of rights and discriminated, as had Hispanic Americans. From 1960s, became more vocal for greater civil rights and their enforcement. Inspired by black civil rights. Civil rights not just for racism as-well, 1960s saw women and gays rise.
