background
After Civil War broke out in April 1861 between the Confederacy and the Union, thousands of men were conscripted into joining the armed forces to help secure the victory for their nation. Women were therefore left to run the home front, however during this time period, their status was still very much undermined. They ran agriculture industries, volunteered as nurses, etc.
factors
It can be argued that their contribution to the war led to changing opinions about women. Some historians such as James McPherson argue that the war had a similar impact on Southern and Northern women, whereas others such as Robert Cook argue that the war impacted women on both sides in different ways.
line of argument
This essay will argue that although Northern and Southern women had a similar experience of the war, the war had differing impacts on them.
