What is anaesthesia?
use of medications (anesthetics) to induce loss of sensation that allows surgeries and procedures to occur without pain
What is anaesthesiology?
Practice of medicine dedicated to the relief of pain & total care of surgical patient pre-, intra- & postoperatively.
Role of an anaesthesiologist?
- Evaluating patient before surgery (preoperative)
- Consulting with surgical team
- Provide pain control
- Supporting of life functions during surgery (intraoperative)
- Supervising care after surgery (post operative)
Role of an anesthesiologist in the operating room?
Provide continual medical assessment of the patient
1. Monitor & control patient’s vital functions
- HR, rhythm, breathing, BP, body temp., fluid balance
- Immediately diagnose & treat any medical problems during surgery or recovery
2. Control pain & level of unconsciousness
Role of an anesthesiologist in post anesthesia care unit?
Allowing them to emerge fully from anesthetics’ effect
- Observed by skilled nurses
- After stabilization sufficiently, transferred to regular room or home
What is the scope of an anaesthesiologist?
- Work in ICU
- Sedation & providing anesthesia outside OR
- MRI, cardiac catheterization - Pioneers in CPR
- Childbirth
- Pain management
- To diagnose & treatment of acute & chronic problems
Triad of anaesthesia?
Involves the administration of drugs to a patient to achieve
1. analgesia
2. muscle relaxation
3. when required hypnosis/amnesia
- Mostly during surgical procedures & investigative/ diagnostic procedures
Features of a good naesthetic?
- Abolish pain
- Be completely reversible
- Be safe
- Provide good operating conditions
- Acceptable to the patient
