Introduction to Cation Analysis Flashcards
tends to look at types of molecules, functional groups, and chemical bonds
ORGANIC QA (iodine test)
looks at the elemental and ionic composition of a sample, usually by examination of ions in aqueous solution
INORGANIC QA
- She used qualitative analysis to find that the solution contained Cu2+ and Cl- ions
add a small amount of distilled water to the precipitate, stir the mixture to form a slurry, and quickly pour half of the slurry into another container
transferring a precipitate
Adjusting pH
test the pH at appropriate intervals by touching the tip of the stirring rod to litmus or other pH indicating paper
spatulas
Never place a metal spatula in a solution. It may dissolve and
cause contamination. If you need to manipulate a solid, use a
rubber policeman on a stirring rod.
Qualitative analysis of cations usually consists of three stages
- based on different solubility properties the cations are separated into 5 groups through the successive addition of selective precipitating reagents
- within each group precipitated cations are separated through selective dissolution processes
- the presence of each cation is verified through different identification tests
