Introduction to Computer Networking Flashcards
(4 cards)
What is the difference between end devices, intermediary devices and media?
- End Devices - Devices that often originate/consume messages in our communication. Also referred to as “hosts”
- Intermediary Devices - Devices used for directing and managing messages across the network. Examples: Switches, routers, firewall devices, modems
- Media - The medium that interconnects devices can be wired or wireless
Wired media can be copper cables or optical fibre E.g Copper cables carry electrical signals, Optical fibres carry light signals
What are rules/protocols?
- Protocols are the rules that the networked devices use to communicate with each other
- Example: TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol)
TCP/IP protocols specify the formatting, addressing and routing mechanism that ensure the delivery of our messages to the correct recipient
State the difference between LAN and WAN
LAN
* Used within small areas (e.g. within an office, building). Provide services and applications to people within a common organisational structure
* A LAN is usually administered by a single organisation
* Offer high-speed communication, e.g. 1 Gbps
* Use LAN-specific equipment (e.g. hubs or switches)
WAN
* Span very large geographic area (e.g. country)
* Connects 2 or more LANs/MANs together using relatively slow-speed connections
* May use satellite, routers, modem or WAN switches for communications
State difference between internet and intranet.
Internet
* The most well-known and widely used publicly accessible internetwork is the Internet.
* The Internet is created by the interconnection of networks belonging to Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
* These ISP networks connect to each other to provide access for millions of users all over the world
Intranet
* Refer to a private connection of LANs and WANs that belongs to an organization
* An Intranet is designed to be accessible only by the organization’s members, employees, or others with authorization
