Meaning of hrm
Hrm is the planning, organising, directing and controlling the procurement, development, compensation, integration, maintenance and reproduction of human resources to the end that individual, organisational and societal objectives are accomplished. It is a staff function and is advisory in nature. It is pervasive function and is inherent in all organisations and at all levels.

Hrm is people oriented
Hrm is concerned with employees as individuals as well as groups. It is the process of achieving the best for between individuals, job , organisation and environment.it is the process of bringing people and organisation together so that the goals of each other are met
Comprehensive function
Hrm is concerned with managing people at work. it covers all types of people at all levels in the organisation. The purpose of hrm is to trigger the employee ‘s contribution to overall productivity, performance and also profitability of the org.
Staff function
The function of hrm is advisory in nature. They do not manufacture or sell goods but they contribute to the success and growth of the org by advising the operating departments on human resource matters. Their performance can be judged from the success of the total org. It is a staff function as it relates to support production as well as marketing.
Pervasive function
Hrm is inherent in all org and at all levels. It is not confined to industry alone. It is equally useful nd necessary in government, armed forces, sports organisations etc. it permeates all the functional areas eg production, marketing, finance, research etc.
Hrm is not only a staff function but a line responsibility
Hrm is advisory in nature and their performance can be judged from the success of the total organisation but it is also a line responsibility as it is required in all organisations and at all levels. It is equally useful and necessary in government, armed forces, sports organisations, etc.
Challenging function
Managing of human resources is a challenging job due to the dynamic nature of people. People have sentiments and emotions and cannot be treated like machines. It is therefore necessary to handle them tactfully.
Continuous function
Management of human resources is an ongoing or never-ending exercise rather than a ‘one shot’ function. It requires a constant alertness and awareness of human relations and their importance in everyday operations.
Individual -oriented
Under hrm, every employee is considered as an individual so as to provide services and programmes to facilitate employee satisfaction.
Development -oriented
Hrm is concerned with developing potential of employees so that they get maximum satisfaction from their work and their best efforts to the org.
Action -oriented
Hrm focuses on action rather than record keeping or procedures. It stressed the solution of human resource problem to achieve both org objectives and employees’ personal goals. It attempts to serve the daily problems of employees with wisdom and action oriented approach in rational way.
Future -oriented
Hrm is concerned with helping an organisation to achieve its objectives in future by providing competent and well motivated employees. It attempts to obtain willing cooperation of people for the attainment of the desired objective.
Interdisciplinary
Hrm involves application of knowledge drawn from several disciplines like sociology, anthropology, psychology, economics , etc. in order to deal with human problems effectively, a manager must depend upon such knowledge. In modern days hrm has become a specialised job.
Science as well as art
Hrm is a science as it contains an organised body of knowledge consisting of principles and techniques. It is also an art becuz it involves application of theoretical knowledge to the problems of human resources. In fact, handling people is one of the most creative art .
Young discipline
Hrm is of competitively recent origin. It is relatively a new specialised area as compared to manufacturing and marketing.
