Education wise, what is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Psychiatrists first train as medical doctors, undertake 6 years of university study and training to gain their basic medical qualifications. Psychologists complete at least 4 years full time undergraduate and postgraduate study in psychology
Medication wise, what is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Due to Psychiatrists being medical doctors, they are legally permitted to prescribe medicine for example, Psychiatrists are allowed to prescribe anti-depressants in the treatment of severe depression. Psychologists are not permitted to prescribe medicine however they are allowed to conduct psychological tests.
Can a Psychiatrist hospitalise a patient? Why?
Yes, Due to their medical training, psychiatrists are allowed to prescribe medicine or hospitalise patients
What are similarities between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?
Both Psychologists and Psychiatrists are trained to help people deal with their mental problems

Overt behaviour refers to any kind of behaviour that can be observed directly whether it being visible or audible.

Covert behaviour are actions that cannot be seen. Covert behaviour is invisible, cognitive or internal

Counselling Psychologists specialise in assisting individuals, couples, families and organisations in the areas of personal wellbeing.
What is Sport Psychology?
A Specialised area of psychology that deals with the psychological factors that influences a persons participation in sport, exercise and physical activity.
What do Sport Psychologists help people with?
- Improving performance though mental skills training (eg. setting goals, manage self-confidence)
- Anxiety management and relaxation (eg. Coping with competition anxiety)
- Team building and leadership
- Concentration and mental preparation
What is Clinical Psychology?
Specialises in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of metal disorders and psychological problems that affect children, families and adults.
What are Clinical Psychologists trained to do?
They work with people of all ages and may work with psychologist and other health professionals in hospitals, universities, community health centres and also private practice.

Specialise in the application of psychological theory and skills to the understand and functioning of the legal and the criminal justice system.

- Convicted offenders
- People who are accused of crimes and are unfit to plead guilty due to a mental illness.
- Offenders living in the general community who are considered a potential threat to others.
