Introduction to Strength of Materials Flashcards
(18 cards)
Three fundamental areas of engineering mechanics
statics, dynamics, and the strength of materials
devoted primarily to
studying the external effects of forces on rigid bodies.
Statics and dynamics
is an idealization of a body that does
not deform or change shape.
Rigid Body
deals with the relations
between externally applied loads and their internal
effects on bodies.
Strength of materials
If the resultant is zero,
static
equilibrium.
If the resultant is not zero,
may apply inertia
forces to bring about dynamic equilibrium.
reference points
x,y&z
the origin of the reference axis is at the centroid
o
coincide with the principles axis of inertia
y,z
axis is normal to the section
x
axial force, measure the pulling or pushing action
on the section, denoted by P
Pxx
a tensile force tends to elongate the member
Pull
a compressive force tends to shorten the
member
Push
shear force, measures sliding action of the
portion to one side of the section past the other.
Pxy , Pxz
measures the resistance to twisting the
member, denoted by M
Mxx, Torque
Bending moment
Mxy , Mxz
Measures the resistance to bending the
member about y-axis
Mxy or My
Measures the resistance to bending the member about z-axis
Mxz or Mz
