What are significant figures?
digits in your number that were already measured + one estimated digit
4.2 sig figs

Rules of significant digits
1- all non zero digits are significant
2-zeroes between significant digits are significant
3-zeroes to the left of non-zero digits ARE NOT significant
4-zeroes at the end of a number are significant ONLY IF THEY are to the RIGHT of the decimal point

Rounding Rules for Sig Figs that DO NOT END in a perfect 5
Apply basic rounding rules- if the digits after the appropriate sig figs are greater than 5, round up. If they are smaller, round down.
Round 36.0501 to 3 Sig Figs

Round 0.01249 to 2 Sig Figs

Round 1045.2 to 3 Sig Figs?

Define the Arcane Rounding Rule
If the number ends in a PERFECT (meaning ever number after is a zero or 5 is the last number)- the digit before the 5 determines the rounding- if it is an even number, it says the same but if it is odd it goes up.
Why is the Arcane Rounding Rule so important?
The Arcane Rounding Rule is important because of statistics. It is used to make sure all the data doesn’t artificially increase

Addition and Subtraction using Sig Figs
After the operation, round to the smallest number to the right of the decimal
56.1+23.22
(79.32) it is 79.3 because since the smallest number is 1, you round to the tenths place
Rules for Multiplication and Division
After performing the operations, round to the number of the least number of sig figs
