invertebrate Flashcards
(23 cards)
Vertebrates
Vertebrates comprise all species of animals within the subphylum Vertebrata. Vertebrates represent the overwhelming majority of the phylum Chordata, with currently about 69,963 species described.
Invertebrates
Invertebrates are animals that neither possess nor develop a vertebral column, derived from the notochord.
Consumer
A consumer is a person or organization that uses or consumes economic services or commodities.
Ganglion
A noncancerous lump, often on the tendons or joints of wrists and hands.
Gut
Human gastrointestinal microbiota, also known as gut flora or gut microbiota, are the microorganisms that live in the digestive tracts of humans.
Coelom
the body cavity in metazoans, located between the intestinal canal and the body wall.
Bilateral Symmetry
Symmetry in biology is the balanced distribution of duplicate body parts or shapes within the body of an organism. In nature and biology, symmetry is always approximate.
Radial Symmetry
symmetry around a central axis, as in a starfish or a tulip flower.
Asymmetry
Asymmetry is the first novel by American author Lisa Holiday, published in February 2018 by Simon & Schumpeter.
Sponges
pongs, the members of the phylum Proliferate, are a basal Metadata clad as a sister of the Diplomatists.
Cnidarians
Cnidaria is a phylum under Kingdom Animalia containing over 11,000 species of animals found exclusively in aquatic environments: they are predominantly marine.
Flatworms
The flatworms, flat worms, Platyhelminthes, Plathelminthes, or platyhelminths are a phylum of relatively simple bilaterian, unsegmented, soft-bodied invertebrates
Roundworms
The nematodes or roundworms constitute the phylum Nematoda. They are a diverse animal phylum inhabiting a broad range of environments.
Mollusks
Mollusca is the second-largest phylum of invertebrate animals after the arthropoda. The members are known as molluscs or mollusks. Around 85,000 extant species of molluscs are recognized.
Open circulatory system
Open circulatory systems are systems where blood, rather than being sealed tight in arteries and veins, suffuses the body and may be directly open to the environment at places such as the digestive tract.
Closed circulatory system
Closed circulatory systems (evolved in echinoderms and vertebrates) have the blood closed at all times within vessels of different size and wall thickness.
Annelid worms
The annelids, also known as the ringed worms or segmented worms, are a large phylum, with over 22,000 extant species including ragworms, earthworms, and leeches.
Exoskeleton
An exoskeleton is the external skeleton that supports and protects an animal’s body, in contrast to the internal skeleton of, for example, a human. In usage, some of the larger kinds of exoskeletons are known as “shells
Compound eye
A compound eye is a visual organ found in arthropods such as insects and crustaceans. It may consist of thousands of ommatidia, which are tiny independent photoreception units that consist of a cornea, lens, and photoreceptor cells which distinguish brightness and color.
Antenna
In radio engineering, an antenna is the interface between radio waves propagating through space and electric currents moving in metal conductors, used with a transmitter or receiver.
Metamorphosis
The Metamorphosis is a novella written by Franz Kafka which was first published in 1915. One of Kafka’s best-known works, The Metamorphosis tells the story of salesman Gregor Samsa who wakes one morning
Endoskeleton
An endoskeleton is an internal support structure of an animal, composed of mineralized tissue.
Water vascular system
The water vascular system is a hydraulic system used by echinoderms, such as sea stars and sea urchins, for locomotion, food and waste transportation, and respiration.
