investigating diversity Flashcards
(12 cards)
How can genetic diversity be investigated?
By comparing frequency of measurable or observable characteristics, amino acid sequences, bases sequences of DNA or mRNA
What is diversity a result of?
Genetic and environmental factors
What is interspecific variation?
Variation between organisms of different species
What is intraspecific variation?
Variation between organisms of the same species - same genes but different alleles
What is essential to ensure when taking measurements of individuals?
They are representative of the population and the sampling isn’t biased
What is used for unbiased sampling?
Quadrats
What is the first step in using quadrats?
Divide the study area into a grid with numbered lines
What is the second step in using quadrats?
Use random numbers from a random number generator to get a set of coordinates
What is the third step in using quadrats?
Take samples at the intersection of each pair of coordinates
What will allow the samples to be representative of the population?
A larger sample size
What is standard deviation?
Refers to measure of the spread of data either side of the mean
What does it mean if there is a large standard deviation?
The degree of variation within the data increases
