Investigating Diversity Flashcards
(2 cards)
1
Q
Explain how data should be collected when investigating variation within a species quantitatively.
A
- Take a random sample to avoid bias. You can do this by using a grid to divide the area into squares and using a random number generator to obtain random coordinates.
- Use the same method of measurement each time.
- Use a large sample size so the data will be representative of the means.
- Calaculate a mean.
- Use a method that is ethical. Make sure it does not harm the organism.

Q
Explain how data should be collected when investigating variation within a species quantitatively.
A
- Calculate a mean to allow comparison.
- Calculate the standard deviation and use it to see whether the two sets of data are significant.
- Do a statistical test and use it to see whether the two sets of data are significant.
