IO Flashcards
(7 cards)
Intro (APE)
A story about two women from different religious and cultural backgrounds who form a powerful emotional bond while hiding from a politically violent riot in Kano, Nigeria
Examining both extracts
Through these two extracts, I will examine how political violence affects civilians not only physically, but emotionally and psychologically
Imagery of tap water
Adichie uses imagery, such as the description of the water as “brownish” and metallic-smelling in order to emphasize the discomfort and abnormality of the setting, symbolizing how political violence forces civilians into unsafe, dehumanizing environments.
Non-linear structure
The non-linear structure alternates between flashbacks and flash-forwards and reflects the fragmented mental state of Chika. It shows how trauma disrupts memory and how civilians attempt to manually rewrite events as a way to process grief.
Color(FFF)
Rockwell uses a muted color palette dominated by warm brown and yellow to create a sense of safety. However, this contracts with the emotional shadows surrounding the father, symbolizing the emotional toll of living with the awareness of global violence.
Blood in MIM
The vivid red blood sharply contrasts with the otherwise unsaturated tones of the painting, symbolizing how political violence interrupts civilian life. The juxtaposition visually marks the act as unnatural, both in the image and society.
Conclusion
Ultimately, both Adichie and Rockwell powerfully demonstrate that political violence is not only public, but deeply personal. It disrupts homes, communities, and the minds of the civilians forced to live through it, showing that its impacts on civilians is physical, emotional and lasting.
