ionic bonding Flashcards
(17 cards)
what is a cation
a positively charged ion
what is an anion
a negatively charged ion
what is an ion
an ion is an atom or group of atoms with a positive or negative charge
what is the atomic number
the atomic number is the number of protons
what is the proton number
another name for the atomic number
what is the mass number
the number of protons and neutrons combined
what is the nucleon number
another name for the mass number
what ions will group 1 metals form
group 1 metals will lose 1 electron and form +1 ions
what ions will group 2 metals form
group 2 metals will lose 2 electrons and form +2 ions
what ions will group 6 non metals form
group 6 nonmetals will gain 2 electrons and form 2- ions
what ions will group 7 non metals form
group 7 nonmetals will gain 1 electron and form 1- ions
what is the charge of a compound
a compound will have an overall charge of 0 so you need to balance out the + and - charges
what are -ide and -ate used for in the names of compounds
these endings are used for the negatively charged ions in a compound
what does -ide mean
-ide means the compound contains 2 elements (one is the nonmetal -ve ion)
what does -ate mean
-ate means the compound contains at least 3 elements, one of which is oxygen
what is an ionic compound
a giant structure of ions
what are ionic compounds held together by
Held together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely
charged ions
