Ionic bonding Flashcards
What does an ionic compound consist of?
A metal and a nonmetal
What does a covalent compound consist of?
Two nonmetals
On what part of the periodic table are the nonmetals?
The far right side
What goes first in an ionic compound? And what goes after?
The name of the metal and then the nonmetal
What are the charges of the groups in the periodic table?
Group 1: +1
Group 2: +2
Group 13: +3
Group 15: -3
Group 16: -2
Group 17: -1
What do you do to balance the charges of ionic compounds?
Multiply the charges of the metal and nonmetal, so they can both have the exact same charge. Canceling out the charges becoming neutral
What would the final balanced compound look like?
Both compounds having the each other’s subscripts.
What does the ionic compound with a transition metal consist of?
Name of the transition metal, a Roman numeral, and a nonmetal ending in -ide
What does the Roman numeral tell you?
The charge of your transition metal, and what it’s charge is within the specific compound
