Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is an ionic bond
A
An ionic bond is the attraction between oppositely charged ions
2
Q
Where do ionic bonds occur
A
They occur between metals and non-metals (metal compounds)
3
Q
Example of an ionic bond
A
-when Na and a Cl atom react together, the Na atoms loses its extra electron to the Cl atom and two ions are formed with full outer shells.
4
Q
What do the opposite charges of the two ions do
A
Attract each other strongly and requires a lot of energy to break them apart. This attraction is called an ionic bond
