Ionic Bonding Flashcards
(37 cards)
How to show the bonding
- State the Lewis dot diagram for each element
- Use arrows to transfer electrons until both atoms are happy and full
- Write the ion number for each atom
- Formula and name
Which element always comes first when naming?
The metal
What is the ending for ionic compounds?
IDE
What are polyatomic ions?
A charged particle that contains many atoms
What charge do grouped ions get?
When 2 or more atoms are grouped together the whole group assumes a particle charge
Criss cross formula
- State ion symbols (-/+)
- Eliminate charges and cross numbers
- Name and formula reduced!!
What are Binary acids
(H) hydrogen plus a single atom
What are Oxy acids
(H) hydrogen plus polyatomic atoms
what is an acid?
Ionic compounds that have hydrogen acting as a cation (if its first in the formula)
What is covalent bonding
The sharing of electrons between 2 non metals
•• what are these?
These are paired electrons they are full and happy and are not involved with any co Valent bonding
• what is this
This is an unpaired electron it is involved with co Valent bonding
What is a combining capacity
The number of unpaired electrons
Which atom is placed at the centre?
The atom with the greatest combining capacity
What are synthesis reactions?
A+B=AB
What are decomposition reactions?
AB=A+B
What is single displacement?
AB+C=AC+B
What is combustion?
Feul+ O2=CO2+H2O+NRG
What is double displacement?
AB+CD=AD+BC
What is neutralization?
Acid +base = salt +water
How to balance chemical equations?
- Divide reactants from products.
- Place “_____” in front of each element/compound
- Change the co-efficient using a guess and check method until reactants and products are balanced
* KEEP POLYATOMICS GROUPED IF ON BOTH SIDES OF EQUATIONS*
What is the activity series
- only single displacement reactions
* the higher up the MORE attractive
What is an ionic bond
It is the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non metal
How long have steel swords been made?
1000 years or 1200 years
