Ionic Bonding - Paper 1 Flashcards
How are ionic bonds formed?
Ionic bonds are formed by the transfer of electrons between atoms to produce cations and anions.
Define ion
An ion is an atom or group of atoms with a positive or negative charge.
Define mass number
The mass number of an atom or ion is the number of nucleons (protons and neutrons).
Define atomic number
The atomic number of an atom or ion is the number of protons, or the difference between the charge and the number of electrons.
Explain the use of the endings –ide and –ate in the names of compounds.
The name of an ionic compound ends in:
-ide if it contains just two elements
-ate if it contains three or more elements, one of which is oxygen
Explain the structure of an ionic compound.
An ionic compound has a giant lattice structure, consisting of a regular arrangement of ions held together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction (ionic bonds) between oppositely charged ions.
