IONIC COMPOUNDS Flashcards
(10 cards)
What’s an ionic bond?
Electrostatic attraction between a positive ion and a negative ion
How is an ionic structure formed?
It is formed by a metal bonding with non-metal by transferring electrons
How are ions formed?
When atoms lose or gain electrons
How are positive and negative ions formed?
If an atom loses electrons, it becomes a positive ion and if an atom gains electrons it becomes a negative ion
What is the mass number?
Protons + neutrons
What is the group number?
the number of electrons on the outer shell
What is the atomic number?
Number of protons
What are the properties of an ionic compound?
High melting point, high boiling point, soluble in water, conducts electricity when molten or aqueous(dissolved in water), does not conduct electricity when solid.
Why does an ionic compound have a high melting/boiling point?
The ionic bonds between the oppositely charged ions are very strong therefore a lot of energy is needed to break them.
When and why can an ionic compound conduct electricity?
Ionic compounds can conduct electricity when they are molten (melted) or in solution (dissolved in water)
