Ions and Ionic Compounds Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is an Ionic Compound?
It is created by two ions (one positive and one negative) that are attracted to one another. It generally contains a metal and a non-metal.
How can you find the formula for an Ionic Compound?
You simply increase the number of ions until you get a neutral compound. This then gives you the formula.
What is an ion?
An ion is a particle that is similar to an atom, but is charged. An ion has a different number of electrons to protons, and it is thus charged either positively or negatively.
Why do atoms lose and gain electrons and become ions?
They do this to get a full outer shell of electrons.
How do you know what ion, an element will create?
The column of the periodic table that it is in will tell you. However, for a transition metal, there will be a latin number next to the element to tell you the ion.
What is the formula for the ion hydroxide?
OH -
What is the formula for the ion nitrate?
NO3 -
What is the formula for the ion carbonate?
CO3 2-
What is the formula for the ion sulfate?
SO4 2-
What is the formula for the ion ammonium?
NH4 +
How can you name an ionic compound?
You name it as ‘metal ion, non-metal ion’.
How can you name an ion?
For a metal, the name stays the same. A non-metal will have an -ide put on the end of the element.
