IOTN Flashcards
What dose the IOTN measure?
IOTN measures the worst feature of a malocclusion
What dose IOTN stands for?
Index of Orthodontic treatment need
Talk about IOTN
Two elements Dental health (DHC) & Aesthetic components (AC)
DHC = to standardize the need for treatment
Attempt to rank malocclusion using the worse feature
Intention to identify individuals who would most likely benefit from orthodontic treatment
AC = Aesthetics of an individual can be identified and rated to a common scale
DHC - what is it used for?
Categorizes the severity of malocclusion into 5 Grades
Order of severity relative to the long term detrimental effects on the dentition
Hierarchical order acronym M.O.C.D.O.
MOCDO - What dose it stands for?
M- Missing teeth O- Overjets (including reverse) C- Crossbites D- Displacement of contact points O- Overbites (including open bites)
DHC - talk about grades
Grades 1 – 5
1 lowest 5 highest score
Grade 3 Moderate need for treatment
Grade 4 and 5 Definite need for treatment
Grade 1 and 2 no need for tretment
DHC - ‘‘a ‘’
a overjet
DHC - ‘‘b ‘’
b reverse overjet
DHC - ‘‘c’’
c crossbite
DHC - ‘‘d’’
d displacement
DHC - ‘‘e
e open bite
DHC - ‘‘f
f deep bite
DHC - ‘‘g
g good occlusion
DHC - ‘‘h
h hypodontia
DHC - ‘‘t
IOTN?
t part erupted, tipped, impacted
4t Partially erupted teeth, tipped and impacted against adjacent teeth
DHC - ‘’s
IOTN?
s submerged teeth
5s Infraoccluded deciduous teeth
DHC - ‘‘p
IOTN?
p cleft
5p Defects of cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial anomalies
DHC - ‘‘l
IOTN?
l post lingual crossbite
4l Posterior lingual crossbite with no functional occlusal contact in one or both buccal segments
DHC - ‘‘i
i impacted
DHC - ‘‘x
IOTN?
x supernumerary
4x Presence of supernumerary teeth
Aesthetic Component - talk about it
Scale of ten colour photographs showing different levels of dental attractiveness
Score reflects the aesthetic impairment
Developed to assess the impact of the appearance of the malocclusion on the patient
To determine the level of potential psychological damage
Used in conjunction with DHC
Patients can compare their teeth to photos
But it is subjective and difficult to accurately assess
AC - grades
Grades 1 –10
1 most attractive 10 least attractive
Aesthetic =/> 6 qualify for NHS treatment
Grade 6 & 7 moderate /borderline need
Grade 8,9 & 10 Definite need for treatment
AC - guidlines
The anterior teeth should be graded in their dental attractiveness as seen
No attempt should be made to predict the future appearance of the dentition
Stained restorations, chipped teeth, poor gingival conditions etc should be ignored in this assessment
IOTN 5i
Impeded eruption of teeth (except 8s) due to crowding, displacement, the presence of supernumerary teeth, retained deciduous teeth and any pathological cause
