Science is distinguished by a shared set of assumptions and methods
Social sciences lacks universally accepted paradims
- too much intenal disagreement and conflicting to be science

Theory Construction
theory - set of general laws/ principles that have the ability to explain something
constructed by gathering evidence via direct observations
- scientifically tested
Hypothesis Testing
tested using systematic and objective methods
- either strenghtened or need to be revised
Falsifiability
Popper- criteria to be successfull and repeated principle
: tested to get the same result/ or proven wrong
Replicability
theory to be trusted needed to be completely replicated with the same results
- determine validity and reliability
Objectivity
researcher keep critical distance from research and participants
Empirical Method
emphasise data collected from direct experience
Locke - theory can’t be scientifically when it’s not been empirically tested and vertified
