Q

Those dainties made to still an infant cries

A

The illusion dainty which is a euphemistic term used for nipples, evokes highly maternal imagery. The use of made here highlights a level of inevitability also – that Isabella was created to be a mother. The fact that she cannot fulfil this, as she replaces a baby with a symbol of Lorenzo shows that she has given up on her female tasks and her destiny in order to be with him. She soothes his restless soul instead of a child.

Q

“So sweet Isabel by gradual decay from beauty fell

A

Tragic fall – sibilance equals sweet nature of Isabel – a metaphor comparing is Isabella to a piece of fruit which continues this extended theme of inevitability her state of innocence before Lorenzo may be married by the growing fruit which is symbolically high in a tree perhaps reflective of the conventionally high position of the tragic protagonist before their beauty
