What is Ka’aba?
An ancient shrine that has 360 idols.
In Islam, what is does crossroad connect?

What are trade routes?
Routes that connected to places around the world, used for trading of goods.
Where did most people live in Islam?
Most lived in an oasis or market town.
What were clans?
People organized into groups called clans to protect and support life.
What was the land like?
Much of the land was desert, but had fertile land.
What is monotheism?
The belief of only one god.
What is a caliph?
A title that means “successor” or “deputy” of Muhammad.
What is shi’a?
The party of “Ali”
Belief that Muhammad’s son- in - law should have succeeded him.
All rulers should be descendants of Muhammad.
What is Sunni?
The belief that Muslim rulers should follow the Sunna or Muhammad’s example.
What is Sufi?
The seeking and devotion to spiritual path instead of material goods.
What are 2 ways to practice Islamic faith?
Shi’a & Sunni.
What were Muhammad’s revelations?
According to Muslim belief, the angel Gabriel came and spoke to Muhammad claiming he would be the last profit and a messenger of Allah.
Why were Muhammad’s ideas unpopular in Mecca?
They thought that it would lead to neglect of Arab gods. They were worried that money would be lost if the city were no longer known as a religious center.
What is a Hijrah?
A migration journey.
Why was Muhammad’s return to Mecca important?
When Muhammad returned to Mecca, he defeated the Mecca leaders and entered the city in triumph. Along with 10,000 followers.
How was the Hijrah a major turning point?
The Hijrah to yathrib was over 200 miles from Mecca.
What does Islam teach it’s followers?
The five pillars, faith, prayer, fast,pilgrimage, and alms.
How does carrying out the five pillars effect the everyday lives of Muslims?
They live their religion while serving the community.
How did observing the Islamic teachings create unity among Muslims?
Every Muslim was expected to worship the same way.
How did the Islamic law affect Muslim attitudes toward Christians and Jews?
They refer to them as the “people of the book”
What is an Allah?
The belief in one god.
What is qur’an?
The holy book of Muslims.
What is a mosque?
A house of worship and prayer.
