Isomerism Flashcards
(10 cards)
Structural isomers
Structural Isomers have the same molecular formula but a different structural formula
There are 3 types of structural isomers - 1. Chain 2. Positional 3. Functional Group
Chain isomers
Same molecular formula but different arrangement of the carbon skeleton.
(Change the chain of carbons, remember to make sure it is a different molecule)
Positional isomers
Same molecular formula but different position of the functional group on the carbon skeleton.
(Eg. Pentan-1-ol AND Pentan-2-ol)
Functional group isomers
Same molecular formula but different functional group.
(Eg. Pent-1-ene AND Cyclopentane)
Why are there E/Z isomers
Beacause the double bond in the carbon can’t rotate (it is rigid)
E
Opposite sides of the carbon double bond
Z
Same sides of the carbon double bond
Trans
E- opposite
Cis
Z- same side
How to find out if it’s E or Z
Look if the things bonded to the double carbon bond have higher or lower priority
