issues Flashcards
(18 cards)
Ethical Issues meaning
What is considered right and wrong by society.
ethical issues of new devices
Pressure to have the best devices and some may not own any.
Unfair disadvantage to those who can’t afford.
ethical issues of CCTV
(1 pro and 4 cons)
Users feel safer because any actions are being monitored so they can receive help if in danger.
Users feel unsafe because they are being watched.
Users feel it is unnecessary to be tracked if they haven’t done anything.
Users may be unaware they are being recorded (need to be informed).
User don’t know where data about them is stored/how it is used.
ethical issues for AI monitoring
3 pros 3 cons
Can limit plagiarism.
Can make sure inappropriate/illegal posts aren’t published so users may feel safer.
Monitoring reports can be used for other reasons e.g. enforcing rules.
Users may not want all their posts to be monitored.
May incorrectly block users/posts.
Website must tell users what it is doing, and they must agree with it.
legal issues meaning
What is actually right and wrong according to law.
legal issues for new devices
2 cons
Responsibility/liability for damage (company vs user).
May not have restrictions e.g. child safety.
legal issues for CCTV
2 pros 1 con
The CCTV area is private property, so customers can just choose not to enter.
It can be used to identify people committing crimes e.g. theft so there is evidence.
Data Protection Act must be followed, or companies could be fined e.g. customers need to be informed about it, data must be held for specified reasons, data must be kept secure.
legal issues for ai monitoring
3 pros 1 con
AI Monitoring:
Copyright, designs and patents act – can automatically check for plagiarism and report them.
Checks that material is all legal.
Users have agreed to the terms when signing up so should expect it.
Data protection act – need to make sure rules are followed so that the company doesn’t face a fine.
cultural issues meaning
How different groups of people are affected or behave because of technology e.g. cultures, poor vs rich.
cultural issues for new devices
2 pros 3 cons
New Devices:
Increased employment in manufacture of devices.
More second hand devices available for poorer people.
People feel that their devices are out-of-date (social pressure).
New devices are expensive.
Increases the digital divide.
cultural issues for ai replacing jobs
3 cons
Replacing people with machines means that they lose their jobs.
There will be a change in demand for skills such as managing hardware/software.
Skills that aren’t required for these jobs may decline and be lost completely.
privacy issues for new devices
Privacy Issues
New Devices:
Internet traffic monitored and viewed in places (schools).
Places (schools) may wish to install software on devices.
People may use cameras to record other people.
privacy issues for CCTV
CCTV:
Users are in a public space and can be legally recorded by anyone anyway.
Users may feel it is an invasion of privacy.
Users may have not given permission to be tracked.
Users may not know the system exists
privacy issues for ai monitoring
AI Monitoring:
People may prefer a computer monitoring their posts over people reading them.
Users may feel like they are being watched all the time.
The Term and Conditions may sign away their rights to privacy when using the website.
Environmental Issues meaning
How technology impacts the natural world.
environmental issues for new devices
New Devices:
Creating electronic devices uses lots of raw materials.
Plastics come from crude oil.
Metals like copper, silver, gold, platinum etc. are used to make devices.
Extracting these metals uses lots of energy and creates lots of pollution (factories).
Distributing these devices also creates pollution (cars).
environmental issues for energy consumption/waste
Generating electricity for manufacture mainly uses non-renewable energy such as coal, oil, and gas.
This causes lots of pollution including greenhouse gases.
Since computers generate heat, they require cooling. Powerful servers used by businesses/the Internet requires special air-conditioned rooms. This uses even more energy and creates more pollution.
Lots of energy is wasted too. Servers only use a small proportion of their processing power. People often leave their devices idle, which uses energy without doing anything.
environmental issues for e waste
People throw away devices either because they break, or they want to upgrade.
Manufacturers and retailers contribute to this problem as they can provide short warranties, have pricing policies that making it cheaper to replace than repair, and use marketing to convince people to upgrade.
E-waste ends up in landfill and can be a hazard as toxic chemicals can leak into the groundwater and harm wildlife.
