what is alpha bias?
when differences between men and women are exaggerated, therefore stereotypical roles may dominate results
what is beta bias?
differences between men and women are minimised. findings are applied to women without further validation
what is androcentrism?
male behaviour is the norm
what are the positive consequences of gender bias?
Alpha bias
-has led to some theorists assert the worth of feminine qualities
Beta bias
-makes people see men and women as the same
what are the negative consequences of gender bias?
Alpha bias
-focus on differences between genders leads to the implication of similarity WITHIN genders, thus ignores how each woman is different
Beta bias
-draws attention away from the idea that men and women have different amounts of power

a theoretical idea that is assumed to apply to all cultural groups
what is ethnocentrism?
a researcher assumes that their own culturally specific practices are natural/right.
what Is free will?
we have choice over our own behaviours
what are the strengths of free will?
-it emphasises the importance of individual differences
what are the limitations of free will?
- free will is subjective and some people argue that it doesn’t exist
- it is impossible to test the idea of free will

all behaviour is predictable
what are the strengths of determinism?
-cause and effect relationships can be found
what are the limitations of determinism?
-reductionist
what is nature?
all of our behaviours are determined by biology
what are the strengths of nature?
-treatments
what are the limitations of nature?
-doesn’t consider the environment
