1
Q

How long do you have to show symptoms for the ICD and the DSM?

A

DSM-6 months

ICD- 1 Month

2
Q

Why may it be an issue that both tools use different time scales?

A

May lead to inconsistencies and unreliable diagnosis.
Over 6 months longer so symptoms are stable however it may lead to the disorder developing.
Whereas, one month you get treatment quicker but it may be too soon to correctly diagnose

3
Q

What impact may it have that both tools have different times?

A

Hopefully diagnosing someone quicker ensures you can treat them quicker.
But if symptoms are left too long to develop may become more difficult to help

4
Q

How do the ICD and the DSM vary in how they define subtypes?

A

ICD-7

DSM-5

5
Q

What may the issue of them both defining subtypes differently?

A

With DSM if you do not have the correct symptoms then you may not be diagnosed with S even if you have it.
However, with ICD they are 2 extra sub types so you’re more likely to be diagnosed with a form of S that DSM dont even acknowledge.
5 and 7 must define differently

6
Q

What may the impact be of them both defining subtypes differently?

A

May not be diagnosed depending on what method is used.
Therefore symptoms may become more severe.
People may be given treatments when in fact they do not have S or vice versa

7
Q

What may the issue be of the DSM making a comparison of the patient to the ‘average person’?

A

The diagnosis is bias due to whether the doctor uses DSM or ICD.
Therefore, if it is down to the doctor who uses DSM make a comparison of what the average person may do.

8
Q

What may the impact be of the DSM making a comparison of the patient to the ‘average person’?

A

Invalid diagnosis because of eccentricities.

Medication may be given even if an individual does not require them if the doctor deems them not as average.
