Q

Inter-faith marriage

A

In a multi-ethnic society, people of different faiths are going to meet and get married
This can cause problems as the parents and relatives of the couple may feel like they have been betrayed
There is question as to how to carry out the wedding ceremony, how to bring up the children of the marriage and what will happen to the couple after death
This can cause tension within the family and between the two families
This may lead to hatred

Q

Bringing up children

A

Most religions encourage parents to ensure that their children are brought up in their religion and become members of it
Some religions teach that parents must keep their children within the faith in order to see them, in life after death
Children in a multi-faith community come into contact with other religions and may choose another religion, or none at all, thus going against their parents
This can cause tension between the parents and the children

Q

There can be a feeling of fear and a sense of being part of a minority

A

Some people argue that the UK is a predominantly Christian country (71.6% of the population) and that Christian traditions are marginalised by attention to other religions
Some feel that this means their beliefs and values are being ignored
This can lead to tension and conflict
