What is ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit)
Preforms the mathematics and logics checks
What is CU (Control Unit)
Directs the operation of the processor
What it is Cache?
stores instructions or data which saves CPU time
What is the unit for hertz?
Hz
What is clock speed?
How many Fetch Decode Execute cycles (instruction) can be execute per second measure in Hertz.
What is MAR (Memory Address Register)
Stores the memory address from which data will be
fetched to the CPU
What is MDR (Memory Data Register)
Holds data that is being transferred to or from memory.
What is Solid State?
stored on flash chips
What is an embedded system?
a mini-computer that performs a task within a larger device
Give some examples for embedded systems
microwaves fridges dishwashers
Give Solid State examples.
Examples: USB Flash Drive Solid State Drive.
How do computers store binary?
1s and 0s
How are images stored?
in small blocks called pixels.
What is resolution?
Resolution is the number of pixels in the image
what is meant by Lossy?
Makes the file size smaller but loses some of the quality (data)
What is meant by Lossless?
Makes the file size small and doesn’t lose quality (Compresses less data than lossy)
What is WAP (Wireless Access Point)
A device that a Wireless NIC can use to connect to a network.
What is NIC (Network Interface Card)
A device in a computer that allows it to connect to a network.
What is a Switch?
Connects computer together to form a network.
What is a Router?
Same as a switch but also connects networks to each other.
What is DNS?
Domain Name Services turn the name of the website www.bbc.co.uk into the IP address required to access it.
What is STAR?
All devices connect to central server or switch.
What is Bandwidth?
This is the amount of data that can be transmitted over a given amount of time.
What is WAN
Network covering more than one location. Uses hardware owned by someone else e.g. BT, Government.
