IUGR neonate
SGA
• Large head compared to rest of the body (cephalisation)
• Large & wide anterior fontanelle (poor formation of membranous bones)
• Absent buccal fat (wizened appearance)
• Small/scaphoid abdomen
• Meconium staining if there was peripartum
• Lskeletal muscle mass and subcutaneous fat tissue
• Loose, dry, & easy peelable skin
• Long finger nails
• Loose fold of skin in the nape of neck, axilla, inter-scapular area, & gluteal region (more than three folds)
• Anxious & hyper alert infant
• Poor breast bud formation & immature female genitalia
• If the infant is symmetrical IUGR,
Dysmorphic facies/ congenital anomalies (suggestive of chromosomal abnormality, syndrome/ intrauterine drug exposure)
