IV characteristics Flashcards
(8 cards)
How can the behaviour of different components be tested ?
By using these circuits:
One with a variable resistor and the component to be tested in parallel with a voltmeter and an ammeter is series
What does the iv graph for an ohmic resistor look like ?
A straight line running through the origin
What does an iv graph for a thermistor look like ?
It goes through the origin but starts off increasing rapidly then slows down
What does the in graph of a semiconductor look like ?
Is starts at the x axis just above as a straight line then gradually increases
How can resistance be found using an iv graph ?
Reading the values for V and I at a point calculating the R using V=IR
How to increase and decrease gradients ?
Components with a constant resistance will give a straight line (ohmic conductor)
As I and v increase the thermistor heats up so the resistance decreases and gradient increases
Semiconductor diode has INFINITE RESISTANCE ( gradient=0 horizontal line)
Below a certain pd after which the resistance is very low so the gradient is steep
What are the name of conductors that obey ohms law ?
Ohmic conductors and they give a straight line
What are the name of conductors that don’t obey ohms law
Non ohmic conductor and doesn’t give a straight line
