Jake Amos Electricity Flashcards
(40 cards)
Active wire
A circuit wire connected to the 240v rms supply at the switch board
Alternating current
Refers to circuits where the charge carriers move backwards than fowards periodically
Ammeter
A device used to measure current
Ampere
The unit of current
Battery
Consists of 2 or more cells joined together and used as a single unit it has two terminals
Capacity
The capacity of a battery provides a measure of the time for which a battery can supply a fixed current
Circuit
An electrical circuit is a complete conducting psthway
Charge carrier
A charge particle moving in a conducting Pathway
Closed circuit
A circuit in which the conductors form a continuous path through which a current can circulate
Circuit breaker
Carriers out the same function as fuse by breaking the circuit when a current exceeds a certain value
Conventional current
The movement of positive charges from the positive terminal of a cell through the conductor to the negstive terminal
Direct current
DC refers to circuits where the net flow of charge is in one direction only
Earth wire
Wire used in power circuits as a safety device it connects the case of the appliance being used to the earth
Efficiency
A measure of the ability to convert an energy input into a useful energy output
Electric charge
A basic property of matter it occurs in two states positive charge and negative charge
Electric current
The movement of charged particles from one place to another
Electric insulator
In an electric insulator the electrons are bound tightly to the nucleus and are not free to travel through the the material
Electric shock
A violent disturbance of the nervous system caused by an electric discharge or current flowing through the body
Electric potential energy
Measures in joules the potential energy of a charge carriers due to their position in the circuit
Electrocution
Death brought by electric shock
Electron
A negatively charged particle found around the nucleus of an atom
Electron current
The term used when dealing with the mechanisms for the movement of electrons
Electron volt
EV a unit used to measure small amounts of energy
Hydro electrity
Electrical energy generated from turbines that are turned by the kinetic energy of flowing water
