James 1 And Charles 1 Flashcards
Why was Charles 1 a reluctant king?
Because he was the second son, and so was not raised to be king. This made him reluctant to ruling.
James 1 was foreign, where did he come from?
Scotland, he was intensely Scottish.
James 1 was uncouth, what does this mean?
awkward, clumsy, or unmannerly: uncouth behavior; an uncouth relative who embarrasses the family.
Charles 1 married Henrietta Maria, a French Catholic. How did the people perceive this?
The people thought it was an attempt to break the Anglican Church and to turn it back to Catholicism.
James 1 was homosexual, this meant he was….
….abusive towards his wife and children. He loved his gay partner more than them and more than the people he ruled over.
Charles 1 wasn’t smart and so….
…..he was blamed for the errors that took place, that were beyond his control.
James 1 was very unpopular in England…
…but in Scotland he was not hated.
Charles 1 hated confrontation (speaking publicly, confronting them) with the Parliament, therefore…
…he decided not to call parliament anymore. This caused the parliament to be more confrontational and angry, which lead to 11yrs tyranny. (No talking for parliament for 11yrs)
Charles 1 had long hair and wore silk and velvety clothes…
….he was suspected to be homosexual. Je was very foppish, (vain)
