A

-Anglican church
- reformation
-but James grew up with the Scottish presbyterian kirk
-widespread hatred of Catholicism
-still some Catholics in England
- Within this anti-Catholic climate, most Catholics remained loyal to the
English Crown, as they had been since the Reformation.

What was the Hampton Court conference, when was it and what was its significant?

A

-1604
-invited representatives from across the religious spectrum to debate
-discuss the millenary petition
-James did not make any changes to the church because he didn’t want to lose his ability to control it
-no reforms along the presbyterian line
-did not abandon ceremonies
-“no bishops, no king”
-allowed for a new translation of the bible

What was Bancroft’s canons, when was it and what was its significance?

A

-1604
-the laws upheld orthodox practices - those that had been condemned by puritans in the millenary petition
-bowing to the name of Jesus
-only 1% of ministers had to be removed - the silenced brethren
-In December 1604 Richard Bancroft was installed as the new Archbishop
of Canterbury
- James intended to initiate a drive for conformity
with the 1604 canons

What was the oath of allegiance, when was it and why was it important?

A

-1606
-James identified that some Catholics were extremists but the majority were loyal subjects
-required moderate Catholics to declare their allegiance to the English monarch
-separates them from the dangerous extremist Catholics
-moderate in applying recusancy fines to moderate Catholics - enforced intermittently
-proved lenient to those who signed the oath- e.g at court
