Q

What seems to be the author’s attitude about charity in chapter 5?

A

The author’s attitude towards charity in this chapter is that the school is “charity” but the students and teachers are treated horribly leaving the question of is it really charity. The institution doesn’t seem very charitable and the charity is being misused.

Q

Why is Helen Burns punished when she knows the answers to Miss Scatcherd’s questions about Charles I? How is she punished? Why do you think that the teacher treats Helen this way?

A

Helen Burns is being punished by Miss Scathcherd even though she knows the question because Miss Scathered found something wrong with everything she did, like saying that her feet are pointing the wrong way. In this case it is because her nails are not clean enough. Helen’s punishment was to be beaten by a bundle of sticks.

Q

What explanation does Helen give for enduring her punishment from Miss Scatcherd without complaining?

A

Helen explains why she endures the punishment by saying that like Christ we should love our enemies and we should forgive them even when they are harsh towards us. Jane on the other hand thinks more of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Helen even tells Jane that she should forgive Mrs. Reed who was horrible to her.

Q

State an emerging theme in the novel based on what Jane Eyre says in the following passage: “A great deal: you are good to those who are good to you. It is all I ever desire to be. If people were always kind and obedient to those who are cruel and unjust, the wicked people would have it all their own way: they would never feel afraid, and so they would never alter, but would grow worse and worse” (Page 69).

A

A theme here is that you should be able to stand up for yourself and not deal with cruel and unjust people. If you are always obedient and do whatever people say, the mean wicked people will take advantage of that and everything will go their way.
