Jane Eyre
first-person narrator of the novel. Ten years old at start of novel. Orphaned and lives with aunt and three cousins.
Mrs. Reed
Jane’s aunt by marriage. Treats Jane harshly and thinks of her as a second-class person.
Uncle Reed
Jane’s mother’s brother, deceased eight years at the start of novel. He was fond of Jane, and made his wife promise to take her of her before he died.
John Reed
Jane’s cousin, fourteen years old at start of novel. Physically and emotionally abuses Jane.
Georgiana Reed
One of Jane’s two female cousins.
Eliza Reed
The other of Jane’s two female cousins.
Bessie
Nurse to the Reed children and Jane. Sends Jane to the breakfast room at the beginning of the novel, but is later sympathetic to her.
Ms. Abbot
A servant at Gateshead who is less friendly toward Jane than Bessie.
Mr. Lloyd
The apothecary who visits Jane after her episode in the red room, and recommends that she go to the Lowood school.
Mr. Brocklehurst
the owner of Lowood school. Visits Reed house and accepts Jane to Lowood. Is very strict and wants girls to follow strict evangelical principles.
Helen Burns
the first friend Jane meets at Lowood school. They discuss books, one of Jane’s passions.
