Jaundice Flashcards
(22 cards)
Microsomal enzyme uridine diphosphoglucoronosyl transferase (glucuronyl transferase) catalyses the formation of what?
Conjugated billirubin
Bacterial enzyme hydrolysis in the gut produces this compound which is excreted in faeces.
Stercobilinogen
What is the cause of physiological jaundice of the newborn?
Excess breakdown of foetal haemoglobin
What is glucagon secreted by?
Alpha islet cells of the pancreas
What is pancreatic polypeptide secreted by?
F islet cells
What is insulin secreted by?
B islet cells
What is somostatin secreted by?
delta cells and extraislet neuroendocrine cell
What structure is situated within the duodenal loop?
Head of the pancreas
Which compound is returned to the liver by the enterohepatic circulation?
Urobilinogen
How much bile does the gallbladder produce a day?
30-80ml
Cholecystokinin is released in response to what?
Introduction of hydrochloric acid, amino acids, or fatty acids into the stomach or duodenum
How many segments does the liver have?
8
What is the functional unit of the liver?
The acinus
What percentage of cardiac output is hepatic blood supply?
25%
Causes of pre-hepatic jaundice
malaria, sickle-cell anaemia, haemolytic anaemia, thalassaemia
Causes of (intra) hepatic jaundice
Hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, glandular fever, drug misuse, primary biliary cirrhosis, Gilbert’s syndrome, liver cancer
Causes of post-hepatic/obstructive jaundice
Gallstones, pancreatic cancer, gall bladder/bile duct, pancreatitis
Physiology of pre-hepatic jaundice
Increased rate of haemolysis, more bilirubin production
Physiology of (intra) hepatic/hepatocellular jaundice
Reduced ability of cells to metabolise and excrete bilirubin (necrosis), build up of unconjugated bilirubin
Physiology of post-hepatic/obstructive jaundice
Obstruction of biliary system, interruption to the drainage of bile containing conjugated bilirubin
What is the structure in the middle of the hepatic lobule?
Central vein
Functions of the liver
Conversion of thyroxine (T4) into triiodothyronine (T3), production of Cholesterol, storing Vitamins A D E K, glycogen storage
