Q

‘The Moor is of a free and open nature,/ that thinks men honest but seem to be so’

A

Iago can acknowledge Othello’s good qualities, and there seems to be an admiration for this, which is another reason why he wants to ruin him, as he is not like him

Q

‘Doth like a poisonous miner gnaw my inwards and nothing can or shall content my soul/ till I am evened with him’

A

Similie - continued motif of poison and shows the pervasive nature of his hatred and jealousy - also adds to the idea of male honour and the anger that ensues if there is suspected infidelity from the wif.e

Q

‘O beware, my lord, of jealousy/ it is the green-eyed monster which doth mock/ the meat it feeds on’

A

Metaphor - the violent imagery of this metaphor shows how jealousy humiliates the beholder, and this challenges Othello’s honour again as it shows him as a lesser man due to the jealousy he feels - he is not at her infidelity but the consequences on himself

Q

‘O curse marriage/ that we can call these delicate creatures ours/ and not their appetites’

A

There is engagement with appearance vs reality here, as women seemingly are passive creatures, yet their inner desires or metaphorically their ‘appetite’, is dangerou.s

Q

‘Speak of me as I am; nothinh extenuate/ nor set down aught in malice… speak of one that loved not wisely; but too well/ of one not easily jealous but, being wrought/ perplexed in the extreme’

A

This seems to be a reversion. back to the Othello we see at the beginning of the play, someone rational and authentic and now in his deat,h he wants to be remembered for his faults as a lesson to other men to not be easily misled
