intro

A
  • play revolves around jealousy
  • most prominent application of the theme is through the character of Othello who is manipulated by the Machiavelian Villian iago to become insanely jealous by the thoughts of his wife with another man, begins to be derogatory to his wife as a result (Leavis)
  • although Iago is the antagonist, he is motivated to commit the acts he does due to his insane about of jealousy (Honigmann)
  • Shakespeare does this as a moral message to highlight how intense emotions can lead to physical consequences to all involved
