Jejunum And Ileum Flashcards
(25 cards)
Beginning
Duodenojejunal flexure
End
Ileocaecal junction
Length
6 meters (20 feet) long
Site
Arranged as loops or coils completely covered by peritoneum and found in free border of small intestine mesentery
Jejunum
- Proximal 2/5 of small intestine mobile part
- Its junction with duodenum is duodenojejunal flexure which is fixed by ligament of Treitz
Jejunum: length
8 feet (2.4 meters) long, usually empty
Jejunum: site
Tends to lie in umbilical region
Jejunum: structure
- Thick wall (thick mucosa and musculosa)
- Wide lumen (due to active peristalsis and absorption)
Jejunum: operation
Felt as double layer
Jejunum: vascularity
More vascularity and right red
Jejunum: mucosal folds
- Numerous circular mucosal folds
- Papillae are longer and less numerous
Jejunum: lymphatic drainage
- Poor in lymph vessels and nodes
- No Peyer’s patches
Jejunum: supply
- Jejunal arteries form simple arterial arcades (1 or 2) in mesentery
- Small amount of fat in mesentery
- Vessels appear clear in mesentery (windows)
Ileum
- Distal 3/5 of small intestine mobile part
- Ends at ileocaecal junction at meeting of right lateral vertical plane with intertubercular plane
Ileum: length
12 feet (3.6 meters) long, usually contains food
Ileum: site
Tends to lie in hypogastrum and right iliac fossa
Ileum: structure
- Thin wall (thin mucosa and musculosa)
- Narrow lumen (due to less active peristalsis and absorption)
Ileum: at operation
Felt as one layer
Ileum: vascularity
Less vascularity and pale red
Ileum: mucosal folds
- Few circular mucosal folds
- Papillae are shorter and more numerous
Ileum: lymphatic drainage
- Rich in lymph vessels and nodes
- Many Peyer’s patches
Ileum: supply
- Ileal arteries form complicated arterial arcades (3 or 4) in mesentery
- Large amount of fat in mesentery
- Vessels are not clear in mesentery (no windows)
Arterial supply
- Jejunal and ileal branches of superior mesenteric artery
Venous drainage
- Superior mesenteric vein (portal circulation)
