Theory of evolution is explored. It was published around same time as novel. All humans evolved from apes. “Animal within me licking the chops of memory” and “apelike spite”

Hyde lives and dies by science. Science is jekylls drug. Science shows omnipresence of duality.
How is duality shown in setting throughout the novel?
Shown with London and soho. London is heart of British empire, soho is dark and dingy and low class. Duality of house is explored, with the front being pleasant and back not so nice.
Describe mr utterson.
He drinks gin alone, which is a low class drink. “Drank gin when he was alone”. He is respectable and “somehow lovable”.
Describe friendship throughout novel.
Jekyll looks up to all his friends and notices when they’re upset. Jekyll is very picky over all his friends. “Friends were those of his own blood or those whom he’d known for longest”. Jekyll is loyal to friends as they are to him.
Does Hyde have any friends?
He has no friends. “To cast it in with Hyde… forever despised and friendless.
Who does Jekyll make friends with?
He is only friends with men of intelligence. “Doctor gave one of his pleasant dinners to 5 or 6 old cronies”.
